Sprite grabbed the knife’s handle. Scotty stared from the pavement, slack jawed. Helen screamed something. Probably no, but Sprite wasn’t listening. Her focus was on the blade and there was no time for sound yet. Only light. Vision.
A moment later the knife was loosed. An elegant blood arch followed its path, bright, red, and delicate. The knife bounced on the blacktop, skittering away. Blood drops followed, stopping where they landed, dark circles and smears.
Helen was still screaming. She rushed to Sprite.
She had already pulled her other hip shooter and looked to the sky, saying simply, “I’m fine.”
